Joseph Farrell ist Professor für Klassische Philologie sowie Mark K. and Esther W. Watkins Professor in the Humanities an der Universität von Pennsylvania, wo er seit 1984 tätig ist.

Er ist der Verfasser von Vergil’s Georgics and the Traditions of Ancient Epic (New York 1991), Latin Language and Latin Culture from Ancient to Modern Times (Cambridge 2001) und der Herausgeber von The Vergilian Century (= Vergilius 47, 2001), A Companion to Vergil’s Aeneidand its Tradition (zusammen mit Michael C. J. Putnam; Malden, MA 2010) sowie Augustan Poetry and the Roman Republic (zusammen mit Damien P. Nelis; Oxford 2013).

Zurzeit arbeitet Joseph Farrell an einem neuen Buch zum antiken Epos mit dem Titel Juno's Aeneid - Metapoetics, Narrativity, Dissent (Princeton University Press).
